About Oklahoma State University

Oklahoma State University is a land-grant, sun-grant, coeducational public research university in Stillwater, which is the county seat of Payne County, located in the US state of Oklahoma. The city was founded in December 1884, and it was the 1st settlement the Unassigned Lands. During the most recent census, the population of Stillwater was estimated at a number of 50 000 inhabitants, which makes the city its own Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Oklahoma State University was founded in 1890, under the Morrill Act, being originally known as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (Oklahoma A&M). It is the flagship institution of the Oklahoma State University System, and it has a total enrollment of more than 30 000 students (2009). The university has been named a Truman Honor Institution, due to the fact that it has 15 Truman scholars (one of the highest totals in the nation), including 6 in the last 7 years, also producing 5 Sloan Fellows.

The athletic teams from Oklahoma State University are known as the Oklahoma State Cowboys, who compete in the NCAA’s Division I-A and in the Big 12 Conference’s South Division, in various sports, being best known for their achievements in golf, basketball and wrestling. The Cowboys have won a total of 49 team national titles, of which 34 are in wrestling, 10 are in golf, 2 in basketball, 1 in baseball and 2 in cross country.
